The Irrigation Society and Schnetz Landscape would like to remind everyone that July is Smart Irrigation Month! Automatic sprinklers offer convenience and control in protecting your landscape investment. Irrigation systems help you to enjoy your yard, and to keep it healthy and beautiful. However, most homeowners tend to overwater their lawn or waste water through inefficient habits. Adopting water-savvy habits is essential to maintaining and extending your community’s water supply, especially during peak use.
Living in Southern California presents a challenge with irrigation. Warm weather, increasing water prices, and water restrictions can cause a beautiful landscape to lose its former glory. Here are a few tips from the Irrigation Society to help you save money and save your garden!
- Adapt your watering schedule to the weather and the season. Familiarize yourself with the settings on your irrigation controller. Adjust the watering schedule regularly to conform with current weather conditions.
- Schedule each individual zone in your irrigation system. “Scheduling” accounts for the type of sprinkler, sun or shade exposure and the soil type for the specific area. The same watering schedule should almost never apply to all zones in the system.
- Inspect your system monthly. Check for leaks, broken or clogged heads, and other problems, or engage an irrigation professional to regularly check your system. Clean micro-irrigation filters as needed.
